UFC’s hottest fighter, Conor McGregor, is beginning to overshadow an interesting main event rematch in Orlando on Saturday.

The UFC world was buzzing in 13 seconds.

Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo and sent the world buzzing over this fight. He became the all-encompassing shadow over the entire UFC promotion, particularly the main event for Saturday’s UFC on FOX Fight Night at Amway Center.

The much-anticipated rematch between Rafael dos Anjos and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has been cast under McGregor’s shadow. The boisterous fighter has always spared no one in his pre-fight barbs. Jose Aldo was not spared for sure and McGregor backed it up.

And now he has his eyes on the winner of this weekend’s fight at Amway Center.

There is no escaping Conor McGregor it would seem. And that is a bit annoying to Cowboy Cerrone, as he told Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports:

“[Expletive] heart and soul into this [expletive] fight,” Cerrone said. “I feel great. I’m in tremendous shape. Everything is positive except that I’m asked about [expletive] Conor, [expletive] Conor all [expletive] day long. I mean, what the [expletive] is that, man?

“About Conor, I don’t know. I have to hold up my end of the bargain and win this fight before it even makes any sense to talk Conor talk. Right now, I’m 1,000 percent invested into Frankenstein [Cerrone’s nickname for dos Anjos], and I’m 1,000 percent into winning that [expletive] belt.”

Yes, McGregor was eyeing a move up to the lightweight division from the featherweight division even before he knocked out Aldo with one punch. The UFC’s biggest male fighting force was pushing for a fight with the dos Anjos-Cerrone winner back in September during UFC’s Champions press conference.

The most talked about man in UFC was going to get more press. And despite having to give up the championship he just won in order to do so, it seems McGregor wants to make UFC Fight Night as much about him and who he will face. It is somewhat expected at this point McGregor’s next fight will be against the winner of the dos Anjos-Cerrone fight.

That takes away from Saturday’s main event in a major way.

The dos Anjos-Cerrone fight is a rematch that has been a while in the making. The two fought first in August 2013 in a match that went the distance with Cerrone losing by unanimous decision. That fight is one of just two fights Cerrone has lost in his last 13 fights.

And Cerrone is chasing his first championship, having failed to win the title in three attempts so far in his UFC career.

Certainly Cerrone should have learned a few things from the way dos Anjos dominated him in that fight two years ago. But a lot certainly can change in the interim too.

So too could the reality for the winner. The shadow is still cast from UFC’s hottest property.

  1. Conor has been overshadowing alot of people since he first stepped into the cage. It’s just in his personality and he’s not going to change anytime soon. Only thing is that it looks like it’s getting him into some hot water. Now with rumour’s that he and Dana are not getting on. As well as the fact that he has plans for his own fight promotion. It may not be long before he exits the UFC. What then?
