Orlando TV Ratings: Kentucky Derby tops Orlando viewers

The Orlando television market remains one of the top markets for horse racing's premiere event. The Kentucky Derby was the clear overall winner on TV.

The 142nd runnig of the Kentucky Derby was a hit in Orlando.

Saturday’s Kentucky Derby on NBC was the most-watched sports telecast of the week in Orlando as the Kentucky Derby garnered 294,563 viewers according to Nielsen.

Orlando ranked 10th nationally among TV markets that watched the race according to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch.

Orlando had a 12.2 local rating for this year’s race which is down from last year’s local rating when Orlando was ranked No. 9 In local markets with a TV Rating of 14.7 locally.

Like Orlando, nationally the race was down 14 percent from last year’s race according to SportsMediaWatch.com. Last year’s race had American Pharaoh’s Kentucky Derby win, the first in its historic Triple Crown run, ending a 37-year drought.

Nyquist won this year’s race as a 2-1 favorite. Nyquist grabbed the lead down the home stretch and held off Exaggerator to win the race. Up next is the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on May 21 for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The most-watched NBA Playoff games of the week were Games One and Two of the Miami Heat’s series against the Toronto Raptors with Game One being most viewed of the two.

Game Four of the Western Conference series between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night was the most watched sporting event on Sunday and second most of the weekend behind the Kentucky Derby. It was tops in the demographic age audience of 18-49 group.
