Oviedo High School will replace University (Orange City) in the high school football playoffs after University self-reported an ineligible player.

University (Orange City) has forfeited their eight wins this season and given up their Playoff berth as the runner up in 8A-2 after the team self-reported that it had played with an ineligible player this season. Oviedo, the third place team in the district, will replace University in the Playoffs, Alicia delGallo of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The Titans have been a consistent member of the Orlando Sentinel’s Super 16 throughout the season. Behind running back Lorenzo Lingard, University has put together a strong rushing attack to burn through the district to a now-forfeited 8-2 record.

University’s lone district loss came to district champion Lake Brantley.

The Lions finished 5-4 overall this season but finished third in the district after defeating Seminole 32-17 and Lake Mary 42-34. In between those two games, Oviedo lost to University 21-14. That game no longer counts and the Lions are on to the Playoffs.

The FHSAA was able to replace University because the deadline to submit the bracket was Friday at midnight. Oviedo will play 8A-1 champion Jacksonville Mandarin one week from Friday.

Oviedo has gotten a balanced offensive attack this season led by dual option quarterback Nick Carbone and running back D.J. Coventry and Xandr’e McCleary. They have own the games that mattered in district, losing only to those two teams that finished ahead of them — in addition to non-district losses to Osceola and Timber Creek in overtime.

The Lions have been solid at home, going 4-1 at John Courier Field. They will have to go on the road for the Playoff and upset Mandarin. At least they have the opportunity.
